Empowerment Strategies to Dismantle Racism in the Healthcare System
Systemic racism is a critical public health concern, yet remains embedded in healthcare organizational practices and perspectives. Assumptive exclusion in medical training, unconscious bias in patient assessment, and normalized societal practices make it difficult to extract racism as a significant factor impacting standards of care. Participants in this webinar will learn how advocates can implement strategies to reduce systemic racism throughout the healthcare system, as individuals and as an organization. Program Objectives:
After attending the webinar, attendees will be able to:
To increase awareness of what unconscious bias looks/sounds like in everyday healthcare encounters, and the potential negative impact on patients and family caregivers of color.
- To share strategies and ideas that empower patients and family caregivers of color impacted by racial bias/systemic racism within the healthcare system.
- To share ideas and strategies that empower those within healthcare to better identify and respond to normalized, entrenched patterns of discriminatory behavior and practices that compromise ethics and standards of care.
- To look at the ethical principles that shape our practice and call for advocates to identify and work to eliminate systemic racism.
