Designing Your Practice

Powerful Partnerships: Meeting a Client’s Needs - A Case Study

Program Overview:

As healthcare advocates address complex client problems, working with a fellow advocate, who has a different background and area of expertise, may be helpful to you and more importantly, beneficial to your client.

Bill M., a client with numerous hospitalizations, needed to manage multiple medical conditions following a traumatic fall, while also needing to convert to Medicare. In addition, medical bills were piling up for him.

What were Bill's best Medicare options?

How was this family going to manage the volume of bills from different providers, in different states, under different insurance plans?

This was the situation that led to Dianne Savastano from Healthassist, and Carey Kempton from Blue Sky Health Care Advocates, to join forces and work together on behalf of a client.

Program Objectives:

  1. Assess when additional expertise is needed on their team to meet the needs of clients
  2. Structure a collegial relationship with another professional health care advocate
  3. Share information regarding how an alliance between advocates contributed to the development of NAHACs first regional group - MAHCA (Massachusetts Healthcare Advocates)

Dianne Savastano and Carey Kempton

Dianne M. Savastano, RN, MBA is Founder and Principal of Healthassist, a Massachusetts-based company founded in 2004, that specializes in helping clients navigate the complexities of the health care system. Beginning as a registered nurse providing direct patient care, Dianne’s 30-year career includes roles as a hospital, insurance and employee benefits executive and as a management consultant. Her experience has taught her to ensure that the healthcare consumer is at the center of the health care equation. Dianne received her BS in Nursing from Rhode Island College and her MBA from Simmons College in Boston. Dianne is a founding member of NAHAC, National Association of Healthcare Advocates, and MAHCA, Massachusetts Health Care Advocates, NAHAC’s first regional group.

Carey C. Kempton, MBA launched Blue Sky Health Care Advocates following personal and professional experiences with the complicated U.S. health care system. She describes her practice as focusing on health insurance and medical bill problem-solving. Before entering the world of health care, Carey worked as a marketing and business manager for a number of small businesses and later in a regional hospital. This work developed her skill as a communicator both with and between different stakeholders – a skill that she draws upon daily in her health care advocacy work.
