Patient and Health Care Advocates and Patient Autonomy: Applying the Principles in Practice
Overview:
Autonomy is a fundamental bioethical principle and legal concept emphasized in western culture. In healthcare, autonomy is the right of the individual to make informed decisions about their care.
Autonomy is not unlimited. It does not mean that an individual may do whatever they want, regardless of the risks or the right to demand specific medical care. The autonomous person can seek guidance and assistance from others, including the patient or health advocate.
As stated, the Preamble of the Ethical Code advocates work with clients who need assistance navigating complex medical and other situations, supporting their ability to make individual and well-informed decisions.
The Preamble of the updated Code of Ethics for Patient & Health Care Advocates expressly recognizes that advocacy is grounded in the bioethical principle of autonomy, maleficence, non-maleficence, and justice.
This webinar reviews the scope and the limits of autonomy. The differences between legal and ethical aspects of autonomy and how autonomy impacts the patient/health advocate’s practice.
After this presentation an advocate will be able to:
- Recognize the scope and the limits of autonomy.
- Identify the differences between legal and ethical aspects of autonomy.
