Janet Beesting Nelson, RN, BSN, BCPA

I went into nursing as a second career to help people in a more direct way. My vision was to ultimately combine my marketing and communication skills with my nursing experience to be a voice for change in the health care system. I am passionate about removing barriers to health care, improving access, and abolishing inequities.

My years working as an RN in the hospital setting and working in the health insurance industry as a chronic disease manager, health coach and case manager gave me insight as to how vulnerable patients can be, and how overwhelming and inhospitable the health care system is just when you need it. It became apparent to me that the role of patient advocate as a care navigator, champion, and health coach is vital in facilitating positive health outcomes. So many factors contribute to physical health, with socio-economic wellbeing and mental health both having a tremendous impact. All elements of health must be considered in the delivery of health care.
