Overview:

Ailene Gerhardt, MA, BCPA, explores the unique considerations and needs of solo agers (an aging adult 55+ who, because of choice or circumstance, is without the family support structure of adult children or close family members). During this presentation, Ailene reviews specific needs related to healthcare, building support systems, and challenging isolation. Ailene also shares programs and resources available to support solo agers and suggest ways for Patient/Health Care Advocates to partner with other key/allied professionals to meet the needs of clients navigating solo. After this presentation an advocate will be able to:

  • Discuss the unique needs and issues, gaps, and barriers faced by solos
  • Identify the unique tasks that solo agers need to consider to age well
  • Assess why health related decision making is a distinct component of a solo ager’s life plan
  • Identify programs and resources available specifically for solo agers
