ACTIVE

This presentation introduces GLP-1 and related incretin-based medications used for weight loss, how the drug class works, who may benefit, and what patients should understand before and during treatment. It reviews their role in appetite regulation, insulin signaling, weight reduction, and cardiometabolic risk improvement.

Also addressed are appropriate patient populations, contraindications, common and serious side effects, long-term use considerations, medication discontinuation, cost and access barriers, and insurance challenges.

A central focus is the role of patient advocates in helping clients evaluate treatment options, communicate with clinicians, navigate coverage requirements, manage side effects, and make informed decisions about sustained weight-management care.

By the end of this session, participants will be able to:

  • Explain the clinical role of GLP-1 and related incretin-based therapies for weight loss, including basic mechanisms of action, major medication categories, approved versus off-label or compounded products, and patient populations for whom these therapies may be considered.
  • Describe key safety, side-effect, and long-term management issues, including common gastrointestinal effects, major cautions and contraindications, dose titration, nutritional adequacy, hydration, lean-mass preservation, discontinuation effects, and the need for ongoing clinical follow-up.
  • Apply patient advocacy strategies to support informed access and safe use, including helping clients clarify goals, compare treatment options, prepare for clinician discussions, navigate insurance and pharmacy barriers, avoid unsafe sources, and develop practical side-effect management plans.

Whether you are already supporting clients who use these medications or simply want to be prepared when questions arise, this session will help you move beyond the hype and toward informed, practical advocacy.
